This is an indicator using results obtained from the voluntary Scottish Vacant and Derelict Land Survey (SVDLS). This survey is run annually and data is collected from Scotland's 32 local authorities.
Derelict land (and buildings) is that which has been so damaged by development or use that it is incapable of being developed for beneficial use without rehabilitation, and which is not being used for either the purpose for which it is held, or for a use acceptable in a local plan.
To measure the number of people that live within 500m of any Derelict site, a national data set was constructed that estimated the population of each property identified as likely to be residential in Ordnance Survey's latest Address-Point data set. For each property in the Address-Point based dataset, the distance to the nearest derelict site boundary was calculated (all boundaries estimated on the basis of site centriod grid reference and overall site size). This highlights those properties within 500m of a derelict site. Those properties' estimated populations were then aggregated up by datazone to give a number for each datazone's population estimated to live within 500m of any derelict site. Each datazone's total population was controlled to equal the latest Mid-Year population estimates published by National Records of of Scotland. This indicator relates to the proportion living in proximity to any derelict site. It is not a measure of exposure.

This dataset does not contain any directly identifiable personal information.
The overall data quality for a particular year will depend on how many Local Authorities have updated their survey for that year. If a Local Authority does not update their data then data for the previous year is rolled forward. This will provide a reasonable estimate but will not take account of any changes in the latest year. Data quality will also be affected by the number of years since the last update.
The United Kingdom Statistics Authority has designated these statistics as National Statistics, in accordance with the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 and signifying compliance with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.
Designation can be interpreted to mean that the statistics: meet identified user needs; are produced, managed and disseminated to high standards; and are explained well.
The types of derelict site that this dataset covers are:
Pre 1991
The percentage of Scotland's population that were estimated to live within 500 metres of a site that was derelict prior to 1991.
Pre 2001
The percentage of Scotland's population that were estimated to live within 500 metres of a site that was derelict prior to 2001.
All
The percentage of Scotland's population that were estimated to live within 500 metres of any derelict site.
Data relating to the Scottish Vacant and Derelict Land Survey is published in Excel format on the Planning Statistics page of the Scottish Government Web site along with a statistical commentary. These are available at: http://www.gov.scot/Topics/Statistics/Browse/Planning/Publications
