The main dataset for the 2016 Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD16) can be found here.
The SIMD income count data is calculated by adding five indicators, and for ratio data by dividing the count by the (unrevised) 2014 mid-year population estimate (source: NRS). The indicators used are:
Number of adults (aged16-59) receiving Income Support or income based Employment and Support Allowance, and the number of adults (all ages) receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance. (Source: DWP)
Number of adults (aged 60 plus) receiving Guaranteed Pension Credit. (Source: DWP)
Number of children (aged 0-15) dependent on a recipient of Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance or Employment Support Allowance. (Source: DWP)
Number of adults (all) not in paid employment receiving Universal Credit. (Source: DWP)
Number of adults and children (aged 0 -15) in in-work families claiming Working or Child Tax Credit with an income of less than £228 per week. (Source: HMRC)
The technical notes for SIMD16 can be found here.
This dataset does not contain any sensitive or personal information.
Further information on the background, methodology and development of the 2016 Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation is available from the Scottish Government website.
Figures for counts at Data Zone level were rounded to the nearest 5. Rates were rounded to the nearest whole number.
Counts for higher level geographies are based on the aggregation of rounded Data Zone level figures.
In two data zones, S01010206 and S01010227, the resident population was zero in the year considered, and income rates could not be determined.
Data zone level indicator scores cannot be compared between 2001 and 2011 data zones due to changed data zone boundaries and changes to the eligibility criteria of certain benefits.
Further information on SIMD 2016 can be found on the Scottish Government website including an Introduction to SIMD, Technical Notes and Methodology Overview.
An interactive mapping tool is also available.
The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) combines seven different domains (aspects) of deprivation:
