Description

Data for Information and communication technologies (ICT) including related industries is from Scottish Annual Business Statistics (SABS). SABS is largely sourced to the Annual Business Survey, which provides data mainly on the Production (including Manufacturing), Construction and Service Sectors in Scotland. The main sectors not covered in SABS are the financial sector & parts of agriculture and the public sector. Data are classified according to industry group. All figures are at current prices.

ICT is based on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) definition. The following industry has not been included in ICT Totals, as there are no business sites in Scotland in 2008-21 for: Electronics: Manufacture of magnetic and optical media (SIC 268). Also, the following industry is not included in 2009 only, as there are no business sites in Scotland in this year for: Information Technology: Publishing of computer games (SIC 5821).

Please note that some related industries have been included separately under this topic heading but are not included in ICT Totals.

Details
Confidentiality Policy

Any starred cell contains confidential data. This is data which has been withheld from publication in order that no information relating to an individual business is disclosed. Caution should therefore be exercised if summary data is calculated; it may include suppressed cells in which case it will not be a true representation of industry totals.

Quality Management

Accuracy and Reliability

There are no specific standard errors available for Information and communication technologies (ICT) including related industries. However, for general information on quality measures, please visit these methodology notes

Coherence and Comparability

Data can be compared between different industries and to look at trends over time.

For information, the following industry has not been included in ICT Totals, as there are no business sites in Scotland in 2008-21 for: Electronics: Manufacture of magnetic and optical media (SIC 268). Also, the following industry is not included in 2009 only, as there are no business sites in Scotland in this year for: Information Technology: Publishing of computer games (SIC 5821).

Counts of the number of enterprises operating within each industry have been included. The same enterprise may operate in more than a single industry, although in each set of Totals there is a single enterprise count.

Accessibility and Clarity

Relevance

The Annual Business Survey, from which the statistics are largely derived, covers approximately two thirds of the economy. The main sectors not covered are the financial sector & parts of agriculture and the public sector. These statistics are therefore best suited to the analysis of individual industries rather than the economy as a whole. Industries are compiled using Standard Industrial Classification (SIC 07) codes. A SIC code is allocated to a business site according to its main activity.

Timeliness and Punctuality

Data for Information and communication technologies (ICT) including related industries will be released after the publication of Scottish Annual Business Statistics (SABS) each year.

Revisions

Data is compiled from an annual survey. Please note that when a new year's Annual Business Survey (ABS) data is released, the previous year's data is revised at the same time.
