Description

The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) 2016 is the Scottish Government’s official tool for identifying concentrations of deprivation in Scotland.

This dataset contains the indicators which comprise the education domain of SIMD16.

The technical notes for SIMD16 with information on indicators and how the domains were constructed can be found here.

Details
Confidentiality Policy

The 'Working age adults with no qualifications' indicator may have been disclosure controlled using either or both of these techniques:

  • targeted record swapping;
  • restriction of detail particularly at low level geographies

Visit the National Archives website for further details.

For the People aged 16-19 not in education, employment or training Indicator, percentages are rounded to the nearest integer. All benefit figures for each geography breakdown have also had a ‘blurring’ factor applied in line with the DWP data disclosure policy.

Quality Management

Full details on data quality are available in the SIMD 2016 Technical Notes.

Accuracy and Reliability

For some (but not all) indicators, the population of the considered age group was zero in some data zones during the time period considered, and indicator rates and ranks could not be determined.

To calculate the overall rankings for the Education domain, the normalised scores for these data zones were set to zero before combining the indicators. As a result, the indicators with missing values moved the overall domain ranking of these data zones towards a middle ranking.

Coherence and Comparability

SIMD is one of four indices that cover the whole of the UK. The Scottish index differs from the other indices in the UK by following a slightly different methodology in constructing the overall index. The following are the key differences:

  • SIMD is based on data zones which are smaller geographical units compared to the Lower Super Output Areas used in the other indices
  • The data sources are different for Health, Education, Crime and Housing domains
Accessibility and Clarity

Further information on SIMD 2016 can be found on the Scottish Government website including an Introduction to SIMD, Technical Notes and Methodology Overview.

An interactive mapping tool is also available.

Relevance

The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) combines seven different domains (aspects) of deprivation:

  • Income
  • Employment
  • Health
  • Education, Skills and Training
  • Geographic Access to Services
  • Crime
  • Housing

This dataset contains the indicators used to calculate the SIMD education domain.

Timeliness and Punctuality

This dataset is not expected to be updated.
