Description

This National Indicator estimates the proportion of natural features, on protected nature sites, in a favourable condition.

The percentage of natural features of protected sites in favourable condition in Scotland for 2005 and 2007-2018 (please note data was not collected for 2006). This data is collected through Scottish Natural Heritage's (SNH) Site Condition Monitoring (SCM) Scheme which aims to assess the condition of the majority of designated natural features at least once every six years (on a rolling programme) and all designated features at least once every twelve years.

Natural features on protected sites cover 3 broad categories, which are habitats, species and earth sciences. Earth sciences includes mainly land features of special geological interest such as ‘geological outcrops and landforms, fossil beds and caves’. Favourable condition means that the features for which SSSIs or Natura sites are designated are in satisfactory condition; or are recovering, with the necessary management measures in place, such that Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) predicts, using expert judgement, that the land will in due course reach favourable condition.

The Official Statistics publication produced by SNH can be found here: Proportion of Scottish protected sites in favourable condition.

Relevance

Natura 2000 sites and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) represent the best of Scotland's natural heritage. Together they form a network of the best natural features throughout Scotland and support a wider network across Great Britain and the European Union. Over 380 Natura 2000 sites and over 1,450 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), covering more than 1,000,000 hectare of Scotland, have been designated for their national or international importance, according to their special biodiversity or geodiversity interest.

Timeliness and Punctuality

This data is published annually by Scottish Natural Heritage (usually in May).
