Description

This dataset presents the weekly, and year to date, provisional number of deaths associated with coronavirus (COVID-19) alongside the total number of deaths registered in Scotland, broken down by age, sex. Tables and commentary for this publication are also available on the NRS website.

Deaths involving COVID-19 include any deaths where COVID-19 is mentioned on the death certificate, whether it is the underlying cause of death or a contributory condition. These figures also include deaths where ‘suspected’ or ‘probable’ COVID-19 appears on the death certificate. The relevant ICD-10 codes for these causes of death are U07.1 and U07.2.

Figures are based on date of registration. In Scotland deaths must be registered within 8 days although in practice, the average time between death and registration is around 3 days. See the NRS website for more information on days between occurrence and registration.

Health Board and Local Authority figures include non-residents. Deaths are allocated to areas based on the usual residence of the deceased. If the deceased was not a Scottish resident, the death is allocated to the area where the death occurred.

Figures on average total deaths of corresponding week over 2014-2019 are presented here for comparison. This average is based on the actual number of death registrations recorded for each corresponding week over those five years. Moveable public holidays, when registration offices are closed, affect the number of registrations made in the published weeks and in the corresponding weeks in previous years.

Quality Management

Information about the quality management process for vital events statistics is available on the NRS website.

Accuracy and Reliability

The UK Statistics Authority has designated NRS vital events statistics as National Statistics, in line with the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 and signifying compliance with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (available on the UK Statistics Authority website).

National Statistics status means that official statistics meet the highest standards of trustworthiness, quality and public value.

Coherence and Comparability

Figures are produced using same definitions as those published by the ONS for England and Wales, so are broadly comparable. The latest ONS data and analysis on coronavirus (COVID-19) in the UK and its effect on the economy and society is available on the ONS website.

There is a slight difference in how NRS and ONS allocate weeks. Weeks used by ONS run from Saturday to Friday whereas NRS uses ISO8601 standard weeks which run from Monday to Sunday. In practice, this is likely to have very little impact on comparisons as there are very few registrations that take place on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Northern Ireland weekly deaths statistics have been extended to include information relating to respiratory and COVID-19 related deaths, and are available on the NISRA website.

Accessibility and Clarity

Data , reports and supplementary material on deaths and other vital events are available on the NRS website.

Relevance

NRS publishes weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual figures of death registrations in Scotland, which are available on the NRS website. To meet user needs in the current situation, we have created this dataset and additional analysis on deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19) for the first time.

Timeliness and Punctuality

This dataset will be published weekly on Wednesday.

Figures are based on deaths registered during the week stated. In Scotland, deaths must be registered within 8 days.

Weeks are based on ISO8601 standard, beginning on a Monday and ending on a Sunday. Often the weeks at the beginning and end of a year with overlap with the surrounding years (e.g. week 1 of 2020 began on Monday 30th December 2019) so these figures may not sum to any annual totals which are subsequently produced.

Revisions

This is provisional data which is subject to change in future weekly/monthly publications. The 2020 data were finalised in June 2021.

Revisions and corrections to previously published statistics are dealt with in accordance with the Scottish Government Statistician Group corporate policy statement on revisions and corrections - a copy of which is available on the Scottish Government website.

Figures are produced using same definitions as those published by the ONS for England and Wales, so are broadly comparable. The latest ONS data and analysis on coronavirus (COVID-19) in the UK and its effect on the economy and society [is available on the ONS website](https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases). The Northern Ireland weekly deaths statistics have been extended to include information relating to respiratory and COVID-19 related deaths, and [are available on the NISRA website](https://www.nisra.gov.uk/statistics/births-deaths-and-marriages/deaths). xsd:string

This dataset presents the weekly, and year to date, provisional number of deaths associated with coronavirus (COVID-19) alongside the total number of deaths registered in Scotland, broken down by age, sex. Tables and commentary for this publication are also available on the [NRS website](https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/covid19stats). See the [NRS website](https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/statistics-and-data/statistics/statistics-by-theme/vital-events/general-background-information/births-and-deaths-days-until-registration) for more information on days between occurrence and registration. Moveable public holidays, when registration offices are closed, affect the number of registrations made in the published weeks and in the corresponding weeks in previous years. xsd:string

This dataset will be published weekly on Wednesday. Figures are based on deaths registered during the week stated. In Scotland, deaths must be registered within 8 days. Weeks are based on ISO8601 standard, beginning on a Monday and ending on a Sunday. Often the weeks at the beginning and end of a year with overlap with the surrounding years (e.g. week 1 of 2020 began on Monday 30th December 2019) so these figures may not sum to any annual totals which are subsequently produced. xsd:string
