Description

Number, and percent, of children who have completed their primary immunisation course of the 6-in-1 vaccine by 24 months of age.

From 1 October 2017, the 6-in-1 vaccine, which also protects against Hepatitis B, replaced the 5-in-1 vaccine in the routine childhood immunisation schedule.

The 6-in-1 vaccine protects against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and Hepatitis B. A complete primary course by 24 months of age is 3 doses of vaccine.

Each cohort reported consists of children reaching 24 months of age in the calendar year.

The NHS Board and local authority are derived from child's home postcode and therefore data with invalid or missing postcodes are not included in the NHS Board and local authority totals. As a result the numbers and rates often differ from those published in the ISD National Statistics publication which can be accessed from the NHS Information Services Division website. In the publication the NHS Board of residence figures are based on the NHS Board recorded on the Scottish Immunisation and Recall System (SIRS) and the local authority figures are based on the local authority of the GP practice where the child is registered.

Confidentiality Policy

The ISD protocol on Statistical Disclosure Protocol is followed.

Quality Management

The data covers the entire child population in Scotland up to six years of age i.e. it is not a sample.

Accuracy and Reliability

As the data are recorded on SIRS for the primary purpose of facilitating the invitation of children for immunisation, a high degree of accuracy of data recording by NHS Boards is required. Quality checks are conducted at data entry by NHS Boards. In addition, NHS Board Immunisation Co-ordinators have the opportunity to review figures for their area prior to publication, so that any issues affecting the reported rates can be highlighted to users as appropriate. Figures are compared to previous years’ figures and expected trends by ISD.

Coherence and Comparability

Data are comparable with data for the rest of the UK. UK vaccine uptake rates are published by country by Public Health England each quarter.

Accessibility and Clarity

Further information about the current immunisation programmes in Scotland, the vaccines available, and the diseases they protect against, can be found via the NHS Inform website.

Relevance

See the NHS ISD webpage on users and uses of statistics.

Timeliness and Punctuality

ISD produce an annual report each March (calendar year figures).

Revisions

These data are not subject to planned revisions. The rates reported reflect immunisation uptake at particular points in time, based on the data recorded. Information for previous years and quarters remain unchanged in subsequent publications.
