Description

This dataset provide the numbers and rates of fires in Scotland down to datazone level. Data is provided for the total number of fires, including accidental and deliberate causes.

Data is entered by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service into the Incident Recording System. This dataset is an extract from this live management information system, and thus may differ slightly from other extracts taken on different dates such as the statistics published on the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service website.

Some fires could only be attributed to Local Authorities, and not lower level geographies. Therefore, the sum of fires for lower level geographies will not match those at Local Authority or Scotland level.

Details
Confidentiality Policy

Information at data zone level has been disclosure controlled with data swapping in some data zones. Swapping data for a small percentage of records before producing the aggregate results at Local Authority level has a negligible effect on the overall trends but ensures the confidentiality of individual records.

Quality Management

Further details on quality assurance of fire incidents data is available in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service guidance notes

Accuracy and Reliability

Data is recorded by the fire service officer in charge of an incident and is grid referenced. Care should be exercised in using the small geography data as low numbers of fires and some small populations can produce atypical outputs.

Coherence and Comparability

The Home Office [publish a range of fire statistics for England]https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/fire-statistics-data-tables).

The Welsh Government publish fire statistics for Wales.

We do not present a link for Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service statistics as they do not use the Incident Reporting System and do not publish comparable statistics.

Accessibility and Clarity

Statistics on Fire and Rescue incidents in Scotland covering fires, casualties, non-fire incidents and false alarms, are available on the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service website. This includes a statistical report, raw data, and infographic.

A glossary defining key terms relating to this dataset is available in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service guidance notes

Relevance

This publication presents fire and rescue incident statistics for Scotland, produced by SFRS in voluntary compliance with the Code of Practice for Statistics.

Timeliness and Punctuality

Incidents should be reported within 2 weeks of occurrence though completion may take longer depending on investigations etc. Data is published as provisional and revised the following year.

Revisions

In February 2019, we updated our methodology for allocating datazones to higher geographies to align with Government Statistical Service Geography Policy. This resulted in revisions to some aggregated figures at Electoral Ward and Scottish Parliament Constituency level.

URI

This is a linked data resource: it has a permanent unique uri at which both humans and machines can find it on the Internet, and which can be used an identifier in queries on our SPARQL endpoint.
