Description

These statistics report on children in families that are in combined low income and material deprivation. The publication can be found here: http://www.gov.scot/isbn/9781788514477

The data is from the Scottish Household Survey.

Low income means an equivalised net household income below 70% of the Scottish median. Material deprivation means being unable to afford three or more basic necessities from a list of 22.

The following breakdowns are available:

  • Council areas
  • Health boards
  • Number of adults in household
  • Number of children in household
  • Disability status (whether any of the adults living in the household is disabled)
  • Work status (whether any of up to two adults in the household is in employment – we have no information about the employment status of any additional adult in the household)
  • Tenure
  • 3-Fold urban/rural class
  • SIMD quintile

The percentage of children in families that cannot afford each item from a list of 22 basic necessities is available from the main publication and the associated tables here: http://www.gov.scot/isbn/9781788514477

The complete methodology for this measure of child poverty can be found here: http://www.gov.scot/Topics/Statistics/Browse/Social-Welfare/IncomePoverty/LAPovertyData
